The yellow EnergyGuide label helps U.S. shoppers compare the expected energy use and operating cost of similar appliances. You may see it on refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, washing machines, water heaters, air conditioners, and other household equipment.

The label is useful, but it is not a prediction of your exact electricity bill. Its figures come from standardized testing and a stated electricity-price assumption. Your real cost will depend on your local rate, how you use the appliance, and the conditions inside your home.

What an EnergyGuide Label Shows

Most EnergyGuide labels include several important pieces of information:

  • The appliance manufacturer and model

  • The appliance type, size, or capacity

  • An estimated yearly operating cost

  • A cost range for comparable models

  • Estimated yearly electricity use in kilowatt-hours

  • An ENERGY STAR logo when the model qualifies

The location and presentation of these details can vary slightly by appliance category, but the annual kWh figure is usually the most useful number for calculating costs with your own electricity rate.

1.Estimated Yearly Energy Cost

The large dollar figure shows an estimated annual operating cost. It is based on the appliance’s standardized energy consumption and the electricity rate printed on the label.

This number is helpful for a quick comparison, but it may not match your actual cost. Electricity prices differ by state, utility, and rate plan. The assumption used for the label may also differ from the price you currently pay.

For a more personal estimate, use the annual kWh figure and your own electricity rate.

2.Comparison Range

The horizontal scale shows how the appliance’s estimated operating cost compares with similar models.

A marker closer to the lower end indicates a lower estimated operating cost within that comparison group. A marker near the higher end indicates a higher estimated cost.

Only compare appliances of a similar type, size, and capacity. A large refrigerator may use more electricity than a compact model while still being efficient for its category.

3.Estimated Yearly Electricity Use

Look for a figure followed by “kWh/year” or wording such as “estimated yearly electricity use.”

A kilowatt-hour is a unit of energy. Electricity providers normally charge customers according to the number of kilowatt-hours used.

Unlike the printed dollar estimate, the annual kWh figure does not depend on the electricity price assumed by the label. This makes it the best starting point for estimating the appliance’s cost at your local rate.

How to Calculate the Cost Using Your Electricity Rate

Use this formula:

Annual electricity cost = annual kWh × electricity rate in dollars per kWh

For example, suppose a refrigerator’s EnergyGuide label shows an estimated consumption of 450 kWh per year. If your electricity rate is $0.18 per kWh:

450 kWh × $0.18 = $81 per year

The average monthly cost would be:

$81 ÷ 12 = $6.75 per month

The approximate daily cost would be:

$81 ÷ 365 = $0.22 per day

These are mathematical estimates, not guarantees. Actual consumption can change with usage, temperature, settings, maintenance, and other conditions.

Cents per kWh Versus Dollars per kWh

Electricity bills may display the rate in cents per kilowatt-hour rather than dollars.

If your rate is 18 cents per kWh, enter either:

  • 18 when a calculator is set to cents/kWh

  • 0.18 when it is set to dollars/kWh

Do not enter 18 into a dollars-per-kWh field. That would make the result 100 times too high.

EnergyGuide Versus ENERGY STAR

EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR are related to energy efficiency, but they serve different purposes.

The EnergyGuide label provides estimated energy use, operating cost, and a comparison with similar products. It helps you evaluate the specific model using standardized information.

ENERGY STAR is a separate efficiency certification. A qualifying appliance must meet the applicable efficiency criteria for its product category.

An appliance can have an EnergyGuide label without being ENERGY STAR certified. When comparing products, use the EnergyGuide figures to estimate costs and the ENERGY STAR mark as an additional efficiency indicator.

How to Compare Two Appliances

The annual kWh figures make it possible to compare two models using the same electricity rate.

Suppose Appliance A uses 400 kWh per year and Appliance B uses 520 kWh per year. At $0.20 per kWh:

Appliance A:

400 kWh × $0.20 = $80 per year

Appliance B:

520 kWh × $0.20 = $104 per year

Estimated difference:

$104 − $80 = $24 per year

If Appliance A costs $120 more to purchase, a simple payback estimate would be:

$120 ÷ $24 = 5 years

This calculation does not account for future electricity-price changes, maintenance, financing, or differences in product life. It is simply a practical way to compare purchase price with estimated operating cost.

Why Your Actual Cost May Be Different

An EnergyGuide estimate is based on standardized conditions. Real-world energy use may be higher or lower because of:

  • Your local electricity rate

  • Household usage patterns

  • Indoor or outdoor temperature

  • Appliance settings

  • Door openings and operating cycles

  • Installation location

  • Maintenance and airflow

  • Time-of-use electricity pricing

  • The appliance’s condition as it ages

A freezer in a hot garage, for example, may operate differently from the same model in a temperature-controlled room. A room air conditioner’s consumption will also depend heavily on climate, thermostat settings, insulation, and daily operating time.
